Stonewall Democrats of Western New York applauds this morning’s overturn by the Vermont legislature of Governor Jim Douglas’ veto of the gay marriage bill. The legislature’s act places Vermont in history as the first state ever to legalize gay marriage by legislative act without a court order. With 29 states currently having a constitutional amendment on the books banning same-sex marriage, and 17 others having laws to the same effect, the time to act is now. In New York, our Governor David Paterson and both U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand support marriage equality. State Senate Majority Leader Malcom Smith supports marriage equality, but has said he does not have the votes to pass it. Call your state representatives. Write them. Lobby them in person on LGBT Equality and Justice Day on Tuesday, April 28th. We have come so far—we will go the distance we have yet to go. |

Stonewall Democrats of Western New York wishes to commend the ruling of the Iowa Supreme Court in finding that the Constitution of the State of Iowa does not allow discrimination. Our Stonewall Democrats of WNY salute the brave couples who filed the suit seeking the extension of marital protections for their families. This is a victory for the third state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage, and an inspiring call to action for us all to stand our ground, fight all attempts to backtrack as a nation, and forward our cause where it is needed; here in New York, in each one of our fifty states. |
